Desires vs Needs

“Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.” ~Gloria Steinem

When we have desires, we are alive. When our desires become realized, we feel happy. Our aspirations are the essence of our life. We were born to fulfill our destiny, our purpose. And our purpose is fueled by our desires.

Our dreams and their manifestation embellish our life. Quite often, though, people get disappointed when they can’t fulfill their goals. They stop dreaming; accept mediocrity, and go with the flow. One of the reasons why our desires are not realized is because we treat them as needs. There is a huge difference between having a desire and having a need.

Life is energy. We are consciously or unconsciously sending out various vibrations, like love, joy, gratitude, fascination, contentment, happiness, pleasure, peace, or doubt, fear, anger, resentment, devastation, despair… The energy we put out is always returned to us. You don’t need to understand or believe in it. It is the law. The law that governs how we fulfill our dreams and live our life. We are constantly summoning good or bad natural forces that define the life we live in. We don’t draw what we want; we attract what we are.

In order for your desire to be realized it has to be filled with strong energy. Our desires are propelled by our emotions and our personal energy. What is need? Need is a lack of something that is required for survival. I am not talking here about our primary needs like food, drink, heat, or sleep. I am talking about psychological mindset that creates craving towards things or situations. And the root of suffering is craving, as it distorts perception. Need comes from the place of fear, making a person weak, dependable, and ineffective. It looks something like this: “I really need to have it. It fulfills me. Without it, I am not enough.” They unconsciously express themselves in lack. When a person is emotionally at the place of lack, they will never attract the abundance, whatever they dream about. There is a difference between saying, “I need you” and “I love you.” The first creates dependency and limitation; while the second creates happiness and freedom. Change your psychological attitude towards what you want to attract. Release attachment. Become flexible. Trust your inner self and the higher power that are always on your side. Take care of the garden of your emotions. Change your energy and you will change your entire experience of the world.

There is a lovely saying of Tranxu, a great Chinese sage, “When the archer shoots for no particular prize, he has all his skills; when he shoots to win a brass buckle, he is already nervous; when he shoots for a gold prize, he goes blind, sees two targets, and is out of his mind. His skill has not changed, but the prize divides him. He cares! He thinks more of winning than of shooting, and the need to win drains him of power.”

Desire should come from the place of excitement. It should make you feel good. Desires that come from your true authentic self, the powerful part of your being, are fulfilled in an easy and natural way. Your true aspirations from the depths of your soul go beyond material possessions or temporary pleasures (which are the side effects of living your true purpose). If you want to live with passion and contentment, your desires have to align with who your true self really is, your soul self. When you are connected to that energy that is when you are unstoppable. It is the energy that works together with you and co-creates the life you want. Your goals and dreams need to be part of your true self. When people unconsciously cultivate the feeling of need, it becomes difficult because they find themselves running out into the world struggling to make things happen. They chase after the goals that are separate from them. Eventually, they give up.

Life is about painting a pretty picture that fulfills our heart and elevates our soul. Our desires are images on the canvas; the colors we choose is our energy; the paints and brushes are the means that deliver us to the place of our dreams. The inspiration is the dialogue between our soul and higher power that makes our picture a masterpiece.
